Harmless, by Brian37 (Now Jackie Leigh) (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter)
Unfettered, unchained, unchecked
The rabid dog froths at the prospect
Of absolute power, the structure of
Which built on the on the foundation
The foundation of ancient stories
Legends of impossible feats, clever
In it’s disguise of morality, certainly
It is harmless?
Yesterday is forgotten, lax is education
They don’t teach the times where reading
Was a crime, when obeying the deity
Was obligatory, an obsession mandated
By the church. Over the wall it will lurch
Breaching like a tsunami, obliterating
The Age Of Reason, giving way to treason
Winter has become the season
Followed by oppression, dead is free expression
Dissent is now suppression, pulpit politics
Are the fat bloated ticks, of conformity
Feasting on the gullibility of sycophants
Harmless religion can never be
Written in the blood of history
They will use it as weapon
To bludgeon and beat you with
Submission, submission, submission
Contrition, contrition, contrition
Fruition, fruition, fruition
Death of the Constitution
Harmless? Such words are not said
Of the rival gangs, that have different names
With the same zealots, defending, defending
Old mythology
A club of angry gods that have guns
And tanks, and bombs, with names
Names like Jesus, Allah, Yahweh
And the sane, see this, and know
It has never been harmless,
I don’t take pleasure
In writing these prose
These words of the obvious
The blind cannot see
Pluralism demands, empathy demands
And rightfully so, that belief in a higher power
Must be protected as part of the market
The market of ideas
But it must never be unfettered
Unchained or unchecked
Never to replace common law
I plead in this fragile moment
To uphold Jefferson’s Wall!
We know what Project 2025 will do
Just like the Imams of Iran
The goal is for democracy to fall.

Existential Threat, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)
How convenient as such
That your God above
Loaths so very muchThe same people you do
You’ve read the scriptures
Through and throughAnd you’ve given into
The flames of hate and fear
And someone close and nearThat you never knew
Was different than you
And those around youYour party heads
And the holy guy
In black threadsAnd white collar
You listen to him holler
That you are holierThat you are superior
That I am inferior
Evil and worthy of scornBecause I was born
With genitalia
That doesn’t match my brainIt drives you insane
That I like to wear skirts
And lacy blouse shirtsAnd pantyhose
And everything that goes
With being a womanAnd it is some emergency
You feel some urgency
To vilify and scapegoat meMerely because
I want to be happy.
You want to
Give me the boot
You think I recruitLike I am in a cult
Like I have magic powers
To make others trans
Those are hardly my plans
But your hate filled fans
Don’t want me to exist
You scream through the halls
Echoing off the walls
Of your echo chamber
You clamor for attention
Call me an aberration
Undue consternation
I am a violation
To youThe hate you eat
Of your bigoted plate
Will meet the same fateOf those in the past who
Scapegoated blacks
Held them as slavesKilled off Native Americans
The original braves
And the ChineseWho built our railways
Millions ride on today
Targeted lesbian and gayYes, love my lipstick
I love my makeup
I love my floral dressI am not the mess
You are,
You’ve been poisonedBy lies and unreasoned
People in power
Who really wantPower over you too.
You fail to heed
The warnings ofMartin Niemoller
Getting rid of me
Is the dark side of historyIt will not improve your life
To gut me with the knife
Of using law to oppressWhy are you obsessed
Over my genitals
And my dress ?Is it that you cant
You cant be happy
Unless you knock others down?I could die today
And we will still exist
We will thrive and persistAnd you will not win
Hate never wins.
(end)
This poem is to my older sister who sent me a hate filled anti trans Facebook short.
I started my transition from male to female 6 months ago. My new name is Jackie (named after a character “Jackie Rush” from the sitcom “Too Close For Comfort”). I am still keeping “Brian James Rational Poet” as my byline because changing the name on 30 years of poetry would be impractical and time consuming.
