• Welcome to Brian James Rational Poet’s poetry blog

Welcome to my poetry blog. I love reading Plath and Sexton and Dickenson and Maya. But to me, the best poets I have read are the unknows. The giants are great for sure, but the friends and locals and groups are a joy to participate in. I encourage everyone who writes poetry to be themselves. It is ok to have influences, but you should always in the end be yourself. There is only one them, and only one you.

Let words be your canvas, show them the raw you, in all your happiness and sadness. Show them your love of nature, and empathy and kindness, but also make them think, provoke, even blaspheme. The poet’s job to me, is to never be shy or timid, but use every word in your vocabulary to paint the best pictures you can. Paint your sunrises, your sunsets, your romance, your fears. Paint your insecurities, your addictions, your successes, your tears.

This blog is dedicated to my late mother Jane. She was my biggest supporter and never let me fall through the cracks. While she was a bit of an authoritarian growing up, that all melted away in her late years, and we grew as close as any parent child could. We had so much fun with our silly car games and rubber duckies, and counting the trees. And our wordplay games, and our thumb wrestling. And forget Yahtzee and backgammon, she always kicked my…… at that. I love you mom. I miss you horribly.

And also my late best friend ever, Bob. He unfortunately passed away in 2017. He lived in Australia, he was a science geek, and he taught me a lot about debate, and some science. I can only grasp overall concepts, not real nitty gritty details. But he most importantly made me feel comfortable in my own skin. I miss you too Bob.

Then there is this annoying guy from Okleeee homa, who says “tators”, and “videeeaaaa” instead of “video”. And don’t get John started on banjos. He is my best friend and he is always there for me, and I love that redneck.

And also Dwayne, Stacey and Vicki. You saved my life all of you. Thank you.

  • Mourning’s Mirror

Mourning’s Mirror, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X.

A broken bridge leaves all on edge
A precipice dangling on precarious ledge
In petty tribalism we drag and drudge

We don’t let go of the ego’s grudge
We slaughter each other in crimson sludge
Disdain of compassion a collateral smudge

Tick, toe tag, of our victories we brag
Through the skull cobblestones, bodies we drag
Blind to the gore, we cheer for more, WIN THE WAR

And the moon’s scarred face, will see no trace
Of our existence, in our sun’s last phase
Long since perished, we arrogantly cherish

The false notion of superiority over others
Our mirrors will mourn our selfish scorn
We are the same species they constantly warn

The old sage of the celestial skies
Were gas clouds give birth in cosmic time
To centers of solar systems, they dance in rhyme

    Oblivious to our insecure chime
The center of nothing is what we are
Insignificant gnats in a buzzing jar

To accept our place, it’s not our space
We are merely riders on this tiny dot
To vanquish, our goal, tribalism’s evil plot
    (end)

Far too often humans will be brutal to each other and future generations will look back at our brutality and mourn what could have been avoided. Our only hope as a species is to stop thinking we are special to time. We are finite and just like we were not around as a species 10 billion years ago, we will not be around as a species 5 billion years from now.

As Shakespeare wrote. “flurry of activity signifying nothing.” But this does not portray hopelessness. We do matter to ourselves while we are alive and matter to those who love us while we are alive. So it matters collectively as a species to know and accept that that other person who doesn’t look or think like you, actually is like you. Because the universe does not care about us so it is up to us to care about each other as a species.

  • My Apologies.

I have not been posting lately and for obvious reasons. I am absolutely stunned by this election. It is extremely disturbing that “They’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats” was a more effective campaign tactic to win than, “I want to give you $6,000 dollars for the first year of your newborn’s life.

Is that how our species is supposed to win in life by using fear and hate and target innocent migrants and transgender? To those outside America we need your voices too. We need you to put pressure on your governments to put pressure on our government to demand accountability and demand we preserve democracy.

We are hanging on by a thread and I don’t see it getting better. This literally feels like 1933 Germany. I am scared for my safety, and the safety of my migrant neighbors and my transgender friends. I don’t want to see concentration camps or the pink triangles again.

  • The Cost Of “Cheap”.

The Cost Of “Cheap “, By Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

Men, don’t come to me when
    Your daughter, mother or sister
End up in a situation that’s grim
In the parking lot at the E.R.

Or bleeding out on the bathroom floor
But hey, paid less for that gallon and got more
And that milk and bread at the grocery store
Are worth your loved ones suffering and dying

I would be lying if I said, your right to vote
Only affects you, you damned well know that’s not true
It is always about you, isn’t it, you cant be a man
Unless there is a woman, or a minority
    That is subordinate to you

We all heard what he said on that bus
But you don’t want me to make a fuss
It’s ok that he went backstage
At a beauty pageant of the underage

But you got that cheaper gas
Not caring that our planet won’t last
As long as that orange misogynist
Puts all white men at the top of the list

You’ll ignore all the crimes he’s done
Grab your bible and grab a gun
Christian Taliban will be so fun
    Innocent migrants on the run

Don’t you get it, you have no clue
All the damage that he will do
Because you stupidly believe it’s true
That he actually gives one shit about you

One Austrian man promised Germany the world
Promised them all that he would do good
That they were the victims and only he could win
And that’s when the vilification thus began

The gypsies and the infirmed were among the first
Political rivals were top on his list
Mass deportation of Jews he started the chain
Then he graduated to the psychotically insane

The chambers will come if we ignore the fire
He is no friend of freedom’s desire
The cost of cheap will be your life
It has already started with the females in your life

It won’t stop at Hispanics or Haitians or Blacks
We’ve seen this scapegoating in Hitler’s attacks
I hope you enjoy your short victory
But it is a cheap mirage masking dark history.

  • Crain Operator

Crain Operator, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

The law makers with no medical degree
    Think they have more expertise
    Female reproductive health they’ve ceased

    Neveah Crain became needlessly deceased
Turned away from the E.R her body became diseased
Sepsis sank in, and her organs failed

These barbaric stories must be told
This vile patriarchy is getting old
Crusty wrinkled men hearts full of mold

The deadly lies that they have sold
Females on the slab, bodies getting cold
He’ll protect you “like it or not”

Between his ears is nothing but rot
They are not chattel for you to use
Women won’t put up with your abuse

They dug her grave, 6 feet deep
Backwards in time they slowly creep
Over your loved one, all shall weep

Neveah Crain, we will never sleep
Of your memory all should keep
They will not win, we will fight to the end

And restore reproductive rights once again.

  • South Houston 40

South Houston 40, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

Doctor, Doctor, what’s the bad news
You’ve got a fetus that done killed you
Houston, we have a major problem
Because the GOP wants to control them

    Josseli was in mid miscarriage
Trump’s Supreme Court the ultimate outrage
Doctor, doctor, what can you do
40 hours later Josseli was through

We have to wait till you’re on death’s door
And hope we can save you all before
Infection kills you, or blood loss more
Back allies and coat hangers, did that before

American Taliban with Bible in hand
They want to ban abortion throughout the land
To all the daughters sisters and mothers
To all the dads, uncles and brothers

Don’t let them put that chain on you
You have the power to beat them too
    Body autonomy is your right
Never ever give up we will fight

    Josseli Barnica, SAY HER NAME
Her family didn’t want her to have this fame
Don’t let her death be in vein
We will restore Roe once again.
    (end)

Josseli Barnica is yet another unfortunate victim of barbaric Republican law made by authoritarian bastards who want to control females bodies like they are chattel and do so without any fucking clue how medical emergencies happen suddenly in a pregnancy and you cannot wait until it gets life threatening. No different than someone noticing a strange blotch on your skin and you go to the dermatologist and they are not sure, but remove it anyway and you later find out it was cancer. Nobody would wait, after finding out they had that blotch for it to get to stage 4 cancer.

This is what these bullshit laws do. They take the power out of the doctor’s hands, the person who spent almost a decade in college and medical school and for what? Male patriarchy.

“States rights” is the solution? Just drive to another state? Um no, a miscarriage isn’t something you wait on. If you don’t abort the fetus before it dies, it can cause either severe blood/fluid loss and or infection. Josseli was told that they had to wait until the fetus’s heartbeat stopped, despite the fact that the miscarriage was already in progress and would have died anyway. 40 hours later and it was too late. She only got treatment 40 hours later but by then the infection killed her 3 days later.

We must not let him back in office! We must fix the Supreme Court.

  • Postmortem

Postmortem, by Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

Have Walter and Ed been put to bed
Is objective journalism soon to be dead?
The wannabe dictator is out of his head
Still the Amazon king, is killing the lead

Stand up to Jeff, stand up to him
Don’t cower to bullies based on a whim
Your duty is to fact, to truth, and a free press
Don’t cave to authoritarians in fear of duress

Murrow and Cronkite are examples to follow
If you abandon them our Constitution will hollow
The bellow of fascism lurks close nearby
Don’t let this be journalism’s last goodbye

  • Garbage Can

Garbage Can, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

He thinks he can, sell that garbage can
An unlimited supply of hate and vilify
    Offering himself up
    As the marmalade messiah

    Throw that greasy spray tan
In that Mar A Lago garbage can
    Save diversity
For every child woman and man

Refuse to buy the peddling of fear
The idea that other humans are refuse
Extinguish his fuse, his filthy muse
The stench of his praising those who

Those who are authoritarians of iron fist
Everyone must insist the end of this twist
    Twist of politics, the bastardization
Of democracy to be replaced with autocracy

    The monster’s recycling bin
    Is a road we’ve been
Been down that dark road before
We’ve seen the gas chamber’s gore

    At the RNC National Convention
    We saw the warning signs
    “Mass deportation”
    Fear exploitation

    Pink triangles along with stars
David rounded up in cattle cars
Females are chattel for men to use
    Stop justifying his verbal abuse

The garbage can is where he should be
It is as clear as day for all to see
History is warning us not to repeat
Of that bully we must defeat.

  • Serious non poem.

For those living in America, vote for Kamala, don’t vote third party and throw away your vote. The stakes are too high. If you care about female body autonomy and LGBTQ rights, and you know he and his party are wrongfully vilifying migrants, there is only one candidate that has any chance of beating him. Kamala can.

Not voting for her is a vote for him. He is dangerous and his own former Chiefs of Staff have said as much. Along with over 100 former staff and other Republicans. I do not like saying this about any politician. I want political pluralism, and honest disagreement. But this is just about his power and avoiding accountability. January 6th was his Beer Hall Putsch. If you don’t know what that is, ask a Jewish person or google it.

He uses the same scapegoating and vilification selling hate and fear, with demands of blind loyalty, iron fist authoritarian language Hitler used in his rise to become dictator. Blame everyone else, tell your followers everyone is out to get you, and sell them the idea that they alone are the solution to all your problems.

These are the behaviors of abusive spouses, mafia bosses, and dictators.

  • Regrets, He Had A Few

Regrets, He Had A Few, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    Regrets, he had a few
    The biggest one
    He confesses to

    Is the deepest regret
    In that holy book you
Buy into and have faith in

    In Genesis where
    The story begins
    He couldn’t get his toys

    His ant farm humans
    To do what he wanted
    Despite being all powerful

    Oh this masterful man
    Had a perfect plan
Dumped it all in the can

    Because he can
    Do what he wants to
    Oh yes, it is true

    Genesis 6:6-7 should be
    Your biggest clue
That he never cared about you

    He regrets making humans
    When he never had to
But why, why the animal cruelty

On top of the genocide too?
I thought his plans were perfect
    Free of any defect

This guy way way up in the sky
    Brought the universe and earth
Into existence in the blink of an eye

    But this barbaric authoritarian way
Is the way he chooses to make you die
If you choose not to love him back

The insecure bully goes on the attack
    Carpet bombs everything
    Even innocent animals as well

Is willing to burn you in hell
Oh what is that nasty morbid smell
Of an abuser who won’t let go?

  • Franklin & The Weather Machine

Franklin & The Weather Machine, By Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter)

    Kill Oscar, code name democracy
    Rupert Murdoch the MAGA reality
Dr Franklin and his propaganda machine

    Fembots Lauren Boebert and Marjorie
    Laura Loomer and Sarah Huckabee
The madman took away female body autonomy

They support the vile rapist with fervent glee
Golden eye Trump praises Putin the KGB spy
Jammie Sommers knows he will do nothing but lie

The petulant bully when called out cries
Falsely plays the victim he always tries
His sycophant robots will always deny

Dr. Franklin and his weather machine
Brings out the worst in human beings
The bionic woman is Harris we know

She will defeat this insecure foe
His reign of chaos is ending you know
So help her win and get out and vote.
    (end)

This poem is based on two si fi action shows of the 70s
    “The 6 Million Dollar Man”
    “The Bionic Woman”

They had a crossover two part episode where the bionic man “Steve Austin” and the bionic woman “Jammie Sommers” went up against a mad scientist “Dr. Franklin” who got a hold of a satellite that could control the weather and cause chaos with storms”

My main reference is how Rupert Murdoch was that mad scientist creating Fox News which for the past 35 years has done nothing but sew hate and distrust of our institutions and bigotry of minorities.

Oscar Goldman in the series was the leader of the American SPY agency “OSI” or “Office of Scientific Intelligence” whose goal it is to protect democracy, and our institutions, much like our Secret Service and CIA in real life.

“Golden Eye” is a James Bond movie in which the Russians had a corrupt General who tried to steal codes that controlled a satellite that could burst electrical charges to earth to disrupt anything electronic and destroy communications and hard drives on computers.

I incorporated it because it wouldn’t surprise me that the script writers of Golden Eye movie writers got their satellite idea from those episodes. The combo of the show and the movie represent the chaos Murdoch and Trump have brought to America.

I see Harris as Jammie Sommers and Tim Walz as Dr Rudy Wells fighting the evil Dr. Franklin who used propaganda, and sycophant bots(fembots) to destroy trust in our institutions and sew division between races and classes.
