• Welcome to Brian James Rational Poet’s poetry blog

Welcome to my poetry blog. I love reading Plath and Sexton and Dickenson and Maya. But to me, the best poets I have read are the unknows. The giants are great for sure, but the friends and locals and groups are a joy to participate in. I encourage everyone who writes poetry to be themselves. It is ok to have influences, but you should always in the end be yourself. There is only one them, and only one you.

Let words be your canvas, show them the raw you, in all your happiness and sadness. Show them your love of nature, and empathy and kindness, but also make them think, provoke, even blaspheme. The poet’s job to me, is to never be shy or timid, but use every word in your vocabulary to paint the best pictures you can. Paint your sunrises, your sunsets, your romance, your fears. Paint your insecurities, your addictions, your successes, your tears.

This blog is dedicated to my late mother Jane. She was my biggest supporter and never let me fall through the cracks. While she was a bit of an authoritarian growing up, that all melted away in her late years, and we grew as close as any parent child could. We had so much fun with our silly car games and rubber duckies, and counting the trees. And our wordplay games, and our thumb wrestling. And forget Yahtzee and backgammon, she always kicked my…… at that. I love you mom. I miss you horribly.

And also my late best friend ever, Bob. He unfortunately passed away in 2017. He lived in Australia, he was a science geek, and he taught me a lot about debate, and some science. I can only grasp overall concepts, not real nitty gritty details. But he most importantly made me feel comfortable in my own skin. I miss you too Bob.

Then there is this annoying guy from Okleeee homa, who says “tators”, and “videeeaaaa” instead of “video”. And don’t get John started on banjos. He is my best friend and he is always there for me, and I love that redneck.

And also Dwayne, Stacey and Vicki. You saved my life all of you. Thank you.

  • Ingrate

Ingrate, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

I put food in your dish
You still look up at the bag and wish
    For my sympathy you fish
That furry little face won’t mesh
You’re still going to try your best
To get me to put food in your dish
    Are you kidding me?
    You haven’t touched a bite
    Try as you might
    You won’t win this fight
    Look, look at your dish
It is full, I am no fool
    Over my eyes that wool
    You won’t pull
    (end)

Every so often my cats will still want food seconds after I put food in their dish, then put the bag back on the shelf. They will walk over to the shelf and stare at the bag. Confused I will look in their dish and they haven’t touched a bite. WHAT THE FUCK? LOL I still love them.

  • Lordanus Brunus Nolanus

Lordanus Brunus Nolanus, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

Burnt at the stake for making the mistake
Of telling the truth about the sparkling night
Lights being suns and not just stars

But these are the scars, the fatalities of progress
Dare they suggest that the church was wrong
For their truth telling their pyre was strong

Wood stacked around him and tied to a post
There ignorance lead them torture the host
Denying the reality of our cosmos

There can be only one sun, and son of God
Those observers of science shall burn in flames
    Blasphemy the zealots violently shames

    Blistering skin, the monsters became
Oppressors breath death burning his his name
Opiate of madness the scientist gets blame

Campo de Flori the execution square
The fervent faithful murdered with glee
    Screams of terror in agony

    This multiple solar complexity
To the magots, it could not be
For one book is all they see.
    (end)

Giordano Bruno, Italian cosmological theorist and philosopher and poet dared to suggest that the other nighttime sky lights were suns just like in our solar system and was burned at the stake by the church for heresy and blasphemy. Lordanus Brunus Nolanus (AKA Filippo Bruno) was his latin birth name.

He lived from 1548 to February 17th 1600 when he was executed in Campo de Flori.

  • Subway School

Subway School, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

The kids of Ukraine, incapable of understanding
Adult war, they live in fear every day of dying
And those with the GOP are constantly lying
That it is a war of choice, they silence history’s voice

Russia’s President Putin, is the product that’s certain
Of old Soviet Communism, a KGB spy on the sly
He will always try, to interfere in our politics

Their schools not made of bricks, underground they sit
In the subways they sit at desks, to avoid the bombing above
GOP shows them no love, abandon them they would
    Not that they should

Occupied once was Poland, and half of Berlin as well
Russia put them through hell, the truth will not be quelled
As Ukraine get’s shelled, classes underground are held
The shaking of the earth, the kids are what it’s worth

Kidnapped some are too, by the Russian army who
Commit war crimes all day through, all their schools are all gone
Burned them to the ground, flattened all around
Nighttime booms, danger looms, no shelter to be found

PTSD, surely those kids see, misery every day
The GOP wants to take away, what little safety they have
They’ll end up on a slab, or prisoners of war
Putin will want more, of this all should abhor

Rumble, shake, blast and take, more territory
Terrified are the teachers, the scars that will leave such
November 9th, 1989, the wall fell, yet memories rust
The kids are in the subways and the GOP is not just
    (end)

It is bad enough the asshole GOP want to abandon our ally and cede Ukraine to Putin, the literal product of Soviet Communism and a KGB spy. Putin who just met with Communist dictator Kim Jong Un to ask North Korea for weapons to continue to attack our ally Ukraine.

If anyone thinks Putin would stop at Ukraine if we gave Ukraine up, you are fooling yourself. And on top of that saying to the kids of Ukraine, “fuck you”.

  • The Risk

The Risk, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    The heart of stone
    Can never know
The pain of the porcelain vase
It is a case of dare to love
    To risk the unrequited
    To risk a later loss
    It is the cost
    The price of passion
    The thrill of embrace
    The comfort of a mate
    To never be open
    Is to deny living
    To deny the feeling
Of an emotion that is so great
    It is a hard tumble
    Rollercoaster rumble
    Indy car heartbeat
    If it ends in defeat
It is a win none the less
    If you’ve done your best
    (end)

  • Help Me

Help Me, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

Felis silvestris, the pair of them
    Darting about like Vincent Price
Jeff Goldblum, chasing a fly in the room

    Zoom zoom, across the floor
The darting target went from the door
To the window, to find an escape

Caught between the blinds and the pane
    Their heads back and forth
    Like watching a tennis match

My feline pair wanted to dispatch
No longer interested in my fish on a string
They got bored found a new plaything

“Help me, help me” in a squeaky voice
The tiny critter had no choice
My two cats were on the chase

Trailing the fly all over the place.
    (end)

My cats were playing with me and their favorite toy my plush fish toy on the end of a string attached to a small plastic stick. Suddenly a fly went by and that was it, they were done with my toy. Talk about squirls and shiny objects.

FYI Felis Silvestris Catus is the species scientific classification for the domestic house cat.

  • Fragile Ego

Fragile Ego, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

You step in front of him after claiming
He is “all powerful” to protect him
But what is it really you are protecting?

    This omnipotent defensive linebacker
Could sack me with a body slam so hard
    I’d break through earth’s crust
And melt in the molten mantel

Funny how his hurricanes and tornados
Have failed to kill this loathsome atheist
And what a carpet bomber he is in his attempts

Lighting strikes church in flames, floods kill his followers
Tornado’s flatten their houses, and here I am, still here
Listening to you threaten me on his behalf

Seems odd that he would need a bodyguard
A marketing department, a public relations firm
Does it make you squirm, my pointing out inconsistencies?

These absurdities? It isn’t that he exists that you do this
It is the fear of being wrong, the fear of being finite
The fear that you’ve wasted your time on a myth

If you have the “faith” you say you do
Then there is nothing I can do to hurt him
So by logical consistency there is no need for you to be

In the middle of a beef you are not involved in.
Please don’t falsely claim now that I am oppressing you
My blasphemy is aimed at bad logic to prove

To me it is tragic this being so fragile and pathetic
As to use threats, like an abusive spouse, a stalker
Incapable of calm reason and explanation

It seems to me you’ve made no examination
    Have no introspection, no contemplation
Of the flaws in your argumentation

Appeal to authority blindly, and how convenient
Your God just happens to hate the same people
    You do.
    (end)

  • Fascist Adjacent

Fascist Adjacent, by Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

He fanned the flames of Obama’s name
Lied about his birthplace all the same
Down the escalator the monster came
Hispanics he called rapists all to defame

McCain no hero, but he’s the real zero
Stood next to Putin and took his side
Tossed our intel into the trash with pride

Cozied up to Kim Jong Un, love letters
He thought were fun, it’s not over
    He’s not done

When we were kids, we knew the rules
When you lost a fair game, you’d gracious lose
Just like a mafia boss, he’ll burn at all cost

One hundred and forty officers injured
Because of his incitement, including two murdered
He’s doing the damage, democracy beleaguered

    Sewing distrust in our institutions
Fascism may here come to fruition
    Malignant authoritarian’s manifestation

The liable rapist stole classified documentation
One man wrecking ball leads to annihilation

Relying on fear and gullibility, the grifter’s shriek
Dog whistle racism, he knows how to speak
Puffs out his chest when he’s really weak

Scapegoat and bully is all he can do
Nothing he says comes close to the truth
    Orange jaundice vicious and mean

The worst politician America has ever seen.

  • Legacy

Legacy, by Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    Legacy
    Is temporary
    Memories fade
    As suns die
    New ones made
    In cosmic time
    Sagan’s blip
    On this tiny ship
    We call earth
    Our short trip
    Is always finite
    So it’s best
    To be kind
    In the time we have.

  • Lost Light

Lost Light, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    I can’t really laugh anymore
There doesn’t seem a reason to be
    I can’t really talk anymore
It’s all been drained out of me

I’ve seen what a snake you are
That is all you will ever be
    You succeed selling your lies
    Excel at conning society

    Slick peddling serpent’s oil
    Shrill of a piercing scream
    Losing my grip of hope
    Lost in this nightmare dream

    I can’t really laugh anymore
There doesn’t seem a reason to be
    I can’t really talk anymore
It’s all been drained out of me

    Eyes of millions blind
Out of this cult they cant find
    Jim Jones comes to mind
    It takes a certain kind

To run to run off the precipice
    Throw America into an abyss
To no depth they wont sink
    Our democracy on the brink

This malignant meteor about to strike
Plunge the nation into dark of night
    They’ve taken away women’s rights
    Humanity’s frightful blight

    I can’t really laugh anymore
There doesn’t seem a reason to be
    I can’t really talk anymore
It’s all been drained out of me

It is the boiling of the sea
It is the flames of raging hate
    Vengeful petulant child
    Autocracy on his slate

    The day is coming near
    The land of growing fear
His feckless voice I always hear
    The solution must be clear

    I can’t really ignore anymore
There doesn’t seem a reason to be
    Complacency is certain doom
    Obliterate his grip on thee

    You cannot sit this out
No matter how tired you are
You have to fight this fraud
It’s coming down to the wire

Don’t flee from this needed fight
    Don’t turn and look away
    Don’t let the bully win
    He won’t get his way

  • Oh But A flicker

Oh But A flicker, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

“Do you know who I am?”
    The insolent self entitled demand
Yes I know who you are
    No humility, no empathy

    Parade around in your vanity
    Wring your fist hypocritically
    Make proclamations incessantly
    Sore loser reacting violently

    Out to leave life’s mark
The vitriol couldn’t be more stark
The bluster with a hollow bark
    A pig who thinks he’s a shark

    Fancies oneself a hero
    Always has been a zero
    Legacy of a clown
    Bringing the country down

    Power isn’t forever
    Even the evil perish
    You’re nothing but a flicker
    History will never cherish
    (end)
