• Welcome to Brian James Rational Poet’s poetry blog

Welcome to my poetry blog. I love reading Plath and Sexton and Dickenson and Maya. But to me, the best poets I have read are the unknows. The giants are great for sure, but the friends and locals and groups are a joy to participate in. I encourage everyone who writes poetry to be themselves. It is ok to have influences, but you should always in the end be yourself. There is only one them, and only one you.

Let words be your canvas, show them the raw you, in all your happiness and sadness. Show them your love of nature, and empathy and kindness, but also make them think, provoke, even blaspheme. The poet’s job to me, is to never be shy or timid, but use every word in your vocabulary to paint the best pictures you can. Paint your sunrises, your sunsets, your romance, your fears. Paint your insecurities, your addictions, your successes, your tears.

This blog is dedicated to my late mother Jane. She was my biggest supporter and never let me fall through the cracks. While she was a bit of an authoritarian growing up, that all melted away in her late years, and we grew as close as any parent child could. We had so much fun with our silly car games and rubber duckies, and counting the trees. And our wordplay games, and our thumb wrestling. And forget Yahtzee and backgammon, she always kicked my…… at that. I love you mom. I miss you horribly.

And also my late best friend ever, Bob. He unfortunately passed away in 2017. He lived in Australia, he was a science geek, and he taught me a lot about debate, and some science. I can only grasp overall concepts, not real nitty gritty details. But he most importantly made me feel comfortable in my own skin. I miss you too Bob.

Then there is this annoying guy from Okleeee homa, who says “tators”, and “videeeaaaa” instead of “video”. And don’t get John started on banjos. He is my best friend and he is always there for me, and I love that redneck.

And also Dwayne, Stacey and Vicki. You saved my life all of you. Thank you.

  • Blood Moon

Blood Moon , By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

The divided land we know today
Dominican Republic and that of Haiti
    Hispaniola it’s prior name

You all well know that of Columbus fame
His ship did fall short of resources
So he threatened the Arawaks with “divine” sources

To give up their bounty to get back to Spain
If they resisted it would be in vain
For his God would bring a blood red moon

A curse to all would come soon
Came the eclipse that would loom
He told them all it would bring them doom

Ignorant and scared when it came
They gave him their crops all the same
Preying upon fear was his game

So why do we honor this conman’s name?
    (end)

Christopher Columbus traveled to Hispaniola and didn’t have enough resources to get back to Spain, so he basically threatened the locals with God and said if they didn’t give him what he wanted God would make the moon disappear and come back blood red as a curse and a threat. So when it did( a natural cycle not of any sky hero’s doing) the Natives panicked and were scared and gave him their limited resources.

  • Plasma Karen

Plasma Karen, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

The jagged tentacles in the sphere
    Lightening haughty, poor you dear
Advertisers left you, deaf tone ear

    Electric cars, rockets explode
Now you’ve gone on attack mode
Calling it blackmail which is hardly so

It is about the hate you sew
    Misinformation, lies and conspiracy
Leaving your company in increasing misery

Like the typical bully, you take no blame
It’s everyone else’s fault, you have no shame
    Nicola’s contribution you defame

    You allow the big lie
You don’t care if women die
    You don’t care about LBTQ

    Don’t call yourself humble
    Don’t call yourself wise
You are responsible for your own demise

You allow the dregs of society
    You echo with childish bombasity
Nobody is blackmailing you with money

Some things really are about principle.
    (end)

Elon makes his living taking money from bullies, bigots, conspiracy theorists and anti science, antisemites, and forced birthers. He has no right to bitch when the free market tells them they have had enough.

  • Saboteurs

Saboteurs, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

The line with the lure, religion is sure
To draw them in, certain to win
The fighting begins, seeing no end

This circle of three, happy to be
Martyrs for thee, blood is the sea
Wanting to die, for an ultimate lie

    The innocent cry, survivors try
To make sense of the violence
    Failing to see such consequence

When you say, “there is no way
    My religion is the cause”
    You should seriously take pause

This isn’t about your personal view
It’s about how the saboteurs read it too
    Justified barbarity they will do

They have a source the same as you
To say they shouldn’t use it to abuse
Misses the point it is irrelevant to

The fact the words are in print
    The saboteurs will never relent
They shout God’s name they are bent

On your destruction, it is the function
    Don’t hide behind “misinterpretation”
    This is a misconception

How you wish others would behave
Does not change the thoughts in their head
If you want the saboteur to be dead

If you want peace and pluralism
If you want to stop the violent schism
If you want to kill “otherism”

The paramount goal is to protect criticism.
    (end)

I love my fellow liberals, but sometimes they over protect and that over protection allows the hate filled and violent, and power hungry people in all religions to sabotage any attempts at peace and pluralism.

There are Muslims in Palestine who have a scorched earth policy and have no intent on protecting religious or political pluralism. In Israel, you have right wing Orthodox Jews , all be it a minority, who do believe in a literal God and are using that belief to justify land grabs. On top of a corrupt leader in Bibi who is using religion to consolidate power.

Liberal Muslims and liberal Jews or secularists have the good intent on wanting everyone to live in peace and want to protect diversity. I love my fellow liberals for that. But when you say it isn’t about religion, that is a big mistake. You may want that to be the case for yourself, but that isn’t the case for the Saboteurs on both sides the are making it about religion. The only way to not make it about religion is to stand up to those who are and not let them do it. But they are doing it. Religion is used as a weapon and to ignore that is why peace cannot be had.

It is the same thing even outside war, even in America, religion is the root cause that female body autonomy has been taken away from women. We now live in an America where even in cases of rape and incest a female can be forced to birth. This isn’t because of secularism, it is a direct result of people picking up the bible and thinking they have the right to impose their religious law on everyone. We literally had a politician named Mike Huckabee write a book called “God, Guns and Bibles”. I don’t think he was basing that on Egyptian mythology.

There are Jews who think Yahweh gave them the land and that they are entitled to steal land/property that is not theirs. They have a religious justification for it. There are Muslims that shout “Allah Akbar” every time a Jew or Infidel is murdered. Both of those justifications have a religious source.

Liberals, if you want peace, and you value pluralism, don’t silence criticism or blasphemy. That will not silence the saboteurs, that will give them the shield to destroy the very pluralism you say you want to protect.

  • Aposiopesis

Aposiopesis, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

Dramatic music build’s up the show
Then there is that line we all know
    “Tune in next week”

Dramatic music leads into the time out
Anticipation you want to find out
Was it a fumble, did the ball pop out

The grinning stop before the punchline
    Everyone in the audience
Knows what is on the comedian’s mind

    An incomplete sentence
    Of crescendo importance
    Sudden stop makes the performance

    Spooky cabin the stalker strikes
    You’re taking a shower
    In the dead of night

The sound in the living room
    Gives you a fright
    You jerk back the curtain

    Pause………..It’s fluffy alright

    Beethoven’s fifth
    Dramatic end
    Mic drop

    In the ordinary
    In the every day
    Our body language

    Completes what we say
    Conveying emotion
    Cutting off our words

    Rhetorical threats
    “Or else!” “Why you!”
When no other words will do

    Implied, you tried
    To speak of taboo
    “He’s sensitive about

    You know….hush hush”
    We’re through.

    Disclaim that insult
    While you say it
“I’m not saying, I’m just saying”

    Winks and nods, furrowed brow
    Raised shout in voice
    Is the how

    Touching foreheads
    In loving glance
    Eyes deadlocked in romance

    “I just want to say”
“I know, shut up and kiss me”.
    (end)

In literature “aposiopesis” is a literary device used to break up a sentence, or end a sentence abruptly in the middle to create some sort of dramatic effect to accentuate an emotion of any kind, or to use for implication, that is designed to be understood by the reader without saying it.

In tv in movies you can think of it as a dramatic pause, or break when the characters know what is going on, or even when they pause and break character in a comedy. Or when the characters don’t complete their sentences but you the viewer know what they said even though they didn’t speak.

It is used to go in and out of ad breaks, when the scene builds up, and cuts to commercial leaving you wanting more. In sports the announces build up the game and talk about the rivals in the game, often in the opening while music plays in the background.

In music it can be dramatic pauses or an abrupt end.

  • This Time Of Year

This Time Of Year, By Brianrrs37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    They gather near, for stuffing
    Cranberry and a bird
On the TV football is heard

Years ago I sat with you
    At your assisted living apartment
And this is what we would do

Prepared at the deli, a turkey meal for two
No fuss, just us, mom and son
Macy’s on the TV we had fun

    My cats independent
    They don’t care
    They can’t understand

    That your no longer here
I sit alone, now that you’re gone
The TV, it doesn’t mater what is on

You’d get me to put up
    Your table top tree
    Reindeer letter holder

    It brought you glee
    Your absence silence
    Is painfully

    Reminding me
    Fourth Thursdays
    In November

    Indifferent time
    Cruel clock
    Vile thief.
    (end)

While you are enjoying your holidays be thankful, because there are people who are alone or are lonely. And just as important you never know what time you really have because life is fragile.

I am ok, and I am not a holiday fan, as far as prep and being fancy. I enjoyed Thanksgiving because my mom did, and I enjoyed spending time with her. It hits me sometimes on special dates. I wish we could have that deli prepared turkey meal together again and watch the Washington/ Dallas game. But she passed away in 2017.

  • The Bluetooth Is No Fairy Tale

The Bluetooth Is No Fairy Tale, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter)

You don’t put this tooth under pillow
And why you use it isn’t because of a fellow
You can listen to jazz with earbuds be mellow

    Here’s some history
    And I will try
    To explain why there’s wi/fi

There was an actress in Hollywood
Beyond her acting she was amazingly good
At inventing things new, now understood

Here husband designed weapons of war
Radio controlled torpedoes she pondered for
Frequency hopping signals to avoid being jammed

That is why today you have earbuds in hand
That is why you can surf while in bed
No ethernet cables you have wi fi instead

    The Female Animal
    My Favorite Spy
    Bob Hope’s to try
    She is an honored lady

    The Story Of Mankind.
    (end)

Hedy Lamarr was born  Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler; Born November 9, 1914[a] – died January 19, 2000.

She invented radio hopping frequencies that while not used in WW2 weaponry did go on to be used in communication technology and is why you now can use wireless headphones and earbuds and don’t have to sit at a desk to be on the internet.

Notes on the last last stanza: Titles or odes to her movies.

    The Female Animal 1958
My Favorite Spy, also stared Bob Hope 1951
Dishonored Lady, 1947, I put my twist on it to say she should be honored, not dishonored.
    The Story Of Mankind, 1957.

She did many more movies and had many inventions. A real genius and dynamo.

I wrote this poem today, and decided to read up on her, never have heard of her until today when someone mentioned her in a FB short. I intend to watch at least one of the movies to actually hear the voice and see the face that influences billions of people still today. And to know I was alive at the same time as her, makes me wish I could have met her.

  • They’re Staring At Me

They’re Staring At Me, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter)

    Peering through the lamp light
Knowing it is morning not night
Yummy time is soon in sight

Daddy daddy why do you wait
You must put food in our dish
We know you can fulfill our wish

We’ll just sit here until you do
Piercing eyes we’ll stare at you
    Possessed, obsessed wee need food

The more you wait the more we brood
Get off your rear and do it now
If you don’t will furrow our brows

Then we’ll scamper and run around
Jump on you and make loud sounds
Fill our dish or paws will pound.

  • Dawkins Deck

Dawkins Deck, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    The deniers of evolution
    Falsely come to the conclusion
That scientists are on some mission

    To destroy the human condition
    Their ignorance on display
    Theists always say

“A monkey gave birth to a man”
    Which proves they don’t understand
The reality that is at hand

    Dawkins pulled out his deck
    Said “Shuffle them and then
Turn the next card over and inspect.”

    Notice the face has changed?
That is how the DNA is arranged
    More decks shuffle and exchange.

Like Morse Code, to rotary phone
    Like your toaster and refrigerator
Don’t look the same, but all

    Are electronic.

The back of the deck is uniform
99.6 percent of DNA in all life does conform
The ace of diamonds and 3 of clubs confirm

Evolution is about the long term
    Slight changes in the sequence
Of the following base pairs they consist

    Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine
Biologists teach this, not to be mean
Only to educate about what Darwin had seen

Take a look at your computer screen
All that in front of your eyes
Is a result of two simple choices

“0s” and “1s” machine language places
And all that is on your laptops
Apps, operating systems, and graphics that pops

If you can understand that diversity
    Your tablet, gamer, smart TV
    Evolution isn’t hard to see
    (end)

Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologist explained that we shouldn’t look at genes mixing like paint, but more like two sets of DNA shuffling like a deck of cards.

The back of the card is universal and uniform(the 99.6% of DNA all life shares). But turn the card over, and that is the 1% difference in slight changes in those base pares of Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine.

Flip the top card over it it is a 2 of clubs, turn the next card over it is a 3 of clubs. Shuffle the deck, long enough you get a King of Diamonds which looks completely different than the 2 of clubs. Now imagine several decks shuffling then splitting into more decks and shuffling and splitting into more decks, you can see very easily how humans are related to other primates.

And like with computers. Everything you see on your screen and every operating system, program, and app are a direct result of the basic two choices of “0s” and “1s”. Look at all that diversity on your computer. Now with evolution, it isn’t just two choices, it is 5 choices when you include Uracil that replaces Thymine in RNA.

It is why we call both pine trees and palm trees trees. Humans are related to those as well. It is just that our common ancestors(decks) split so much over billions of years that our looks are completely different. We looks similar to other primates because the time difference isn’t as far apart.

It is hard for laypeople to grasp, but it is absolutely true, you are related to all life that you see around you. It is just that you are less similar because of time and shuffling and shuffling and shuffling, just like a deck of cards.

  • Death Of Democracy

Death Of Democracy, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

His never ending deluge of defamation
Attacking every institution in the nation
Free press, FBI, Judges who won’t buy his lies
In ignorance and fear democracy dies

The hot tub full of lobsters and frogs
The cult leader calls us all dogs
He’ll slit our throats like luau hoggs

    The echo’s of tyrannies past
Rise from the ashes of apathy
    Mar A Lago lacks empathy

Fuhrer’s lips strike hard and fast
    Vitriol shapes his sick politics
    Unashamed of his dirty tricks

“The black man was not born here”
    “John was no hero”
    “Mexicans are rapists”
    But he’s the real zero

    Now we are “Vermin”
    The Brownshirts are coming
In a past life he was German
    Einsatzgruppen

    He praises Xi
    He praises Un
    He praises Putin
    He’s their son

    Authoritarian wannabe
    His sycophants and minions
    Revel in glee

    The echos of horrors
    Will come to be
Once again if we fall to see

    How fragile is our democracy.

  • Some Like It Hot

Some Like It Hot, By Brianrrs37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB/META and @Brianrrs37 on Twitter/X)

    Foreigner, Poindexter, Power Machine
Frigid temperatures were all they could glean
Even the our sun by comparison
As hot as it is can’t get the job done

    Near the speed of light
    The atoms smash
Like the black and white movie
    When the locomotives crash

    In The Large Hadron Collider
    Scientists created the hottest temperature
    9.9 trillion degrees Fahrenheit
The experiment did capture with delight

    The fragmented parts
    That turned into plasma
    “I’m shivering cold”
    Cries out the magma
    (end)

Another silly poem about real scientific facts. Scientist smashed atoms at what is called the Large Hadron Collider at the French/Swiss boarder. It is a giant ring designed to speed to gold atoms at each other near the speed of light. When they smashed into each other, the collision and friction created heat 9.9 trillion degrees Fahrenheit. Nearly 400,000 time hotter that the center core of our sun.

Don’t freak out, the collision is so quantumly small there is no way that heat would destroy the equipment used to do the experiment or life for that matter.

    Notes on the first stanza

The Foreigner had a song called “Hot Blooded”
Buster Poindexter had a song called, “Hot, Hot, Hot”
Power Station with Robert Palmer had a song “Some Like It Hot”

My silly metaphor for saying “WHAT THE F, WOW!”

Smashing atoms gives scientists and the world a view of the beginnings of the universe just fractions of a second after the Big Bang.
