Schadenfreude, a German word
You might not have heard
The SS herd, and Einsatzgruppen
Got joy out of the suffering of Jews

They buy the lies of Fox News
I.C.E. have become an lawless intrusion
And the fans in the media stadium
Cheer for the demise of their fellow humans

Why is it my species are all too tribal
When we feel threatened by a rival
We turn to the biggest bullies on the block
Shout with fervor to cease their stock

And trade of hate is made by forgetting
Forgetting that we are all of flesh
A cut is a cut, and and a death is a death
That rots our ability to see ourselves the same

I do get joy out of the defeat of a bully
But that is not the same as getting joy
Out of destruction in mass,
Treating all outsiders as a subhuman class

Hamas, Bibi, and Trump, the Imams of Iran
The White Christian Nationalist Klan
Are the grey clouds in pitch black night
Their power means to kill hope’s light

Defense of pluralism must be our fight
I find no enemies in those who try
To defend the least with the most to lose
Reject greed and those who chose

Obliteration through iron fist
Those in office who wave their fist
Demand you are prostrate in compliance
You must resist with all defiance

All who live are on the same home
Planet earth is were we roam
Weapons of fear used to divide
Will cease us all if we don’t decide

To destroy fear with familiarity
To know your neighbor as human
To see that a flower garden is great
When the blooms are diverse.
